Mission Moment: Safe Travel for Tessa
Tessa is a bright 7-year-old girl who requires a special needs car seat to keep her safe in transit. She has several health conditions that, if she rides in a regular car seat, would induce seizures. Her care team requested that her Medicaid Managed Care Organization (MCO) authorize and cover the special needs car seat, but the MCO denied the request. Tessa’s family was referred to MLP, and they worked with the attorney to understand their rights under Medicaid. The MLP attorney filed an appeal to the denial on their behalf. Tessa’s services were deemed medically necessary, and they found that the MCO created arbitrary rules that were more restrictive than federal Medicaid rules.
With the attorney’s advocacy, the Medicaid MCO overturned the denial and covered the cost of the specialized car seat. Tessa and her family can now rest easy while traveling together, knowing that Tessa has the correct equipment to keep her safe and healthy.
